FAQ's

What is free-form dance?

It is many things, but one way to describe it is...it's a self-choregraphed, fun way to practice creative movement. The body is made to move, and dance can be a powerful path to freedom and authentic expression.  Our intention is to provide a safe and comfortable space where it becomes easy to listen to and follow your body's own natural rhythms. There are no expectations or steps to learn.  Participants only need a willingness to move and be open to exploring at their own pace what dance means for them. During our classes, we provide guidance and support, but we never tell someone what kind of experience they're supposed to have.  Free-form dance is dancing how you feel rather than how you think.

Free-form dance can be...

  • A great physical workout
  • A means of self-exploration
  • A way to play and have fun
  • A spiritual practice

What's a class like at Tsunami Studio?

All of our classes are unique and the level of facilitation varies from class to class, however participants will find that one thing they all share in common is their emphasis on moving your body the way it wants to.  At Tsunami Studio, you always have the freedom to create your own dance experience. The studio's doors open fifteen minutes prior to a class or special event starting so if you  want time to stretch and warm-up we encourage you to show up early.  Generally classes include a brief opening circle, an hour-long dance set, and a few moments of silence at the end.  Music playlists are from 45 minutes to an hour in length and a wide selection of music genres are played.  You can expect to dance to a variety of world, electronic, hip-hop, reggae, new age, trance, pop and good ol' rock and roll.   Down-tempo grooves begin the set with a build-up towards a peak of fast beats and then a gradual slowing down with mellow music to bring the class to a relaxing place of calm and stillness.  Please see our Class Schedule page for further descriptions.

What's the cost for a class?

$12   We encourage frequent class members to attend and pre-pay for all four sessions of a class each month in order to receive a $2.00 discount on each class.

What do I wear?

You can dance in anything you want, but we recommend comfortable clothing that's easy to move in.  We ask that you dance barefoot, but if you need to wear supportive footwear dance shoes are allowed.  Dancing in socks is not permitted as the hardwood floors can cause one to slip easily.

Can I bring my kids?

Our experience has shown us that small children and teenagers require different levels of facilitation and guidance. Occasionally, we offer classes geared towards the younger generation and families.  Check our Workshops and Special Events page for updates.  Our regular classes are oriented to adults.

What else do I need to know?

  • Our dance spaces are drug and alcohol-free places.
  • We try to hold our events in handicapped-accessible buildings.
  • Filtered water is available onsite.
  • Plenty of street parking
